| How can I check my mail at home and work? (2 or more places) |
There are a few ways this can be accomplished successfully. Depending on your routine (practices), it will vary, but below are some ideas to make your traveling and E-Mail movement better.
Let's assume you have E-Mail configured on a PC that you will consider your 'Main PC' (Henceforth known as 'Main'). This PC is where you will keep copies of all your received mail, and be the place you do 'the majority' of your E-Mail work. In the 'options' of that E-Mail program, you should not have leave mail on server' selected. This means that when you check mail on your 'main' PC, it will always pull the mail OFF of the internet, and keep it permanently (until you delete it) locally on that PC.
Now let's say you often go to another PC at the home or office which we will term as your 'Secondary PC'. You want to be able to check the day's mail (or since you were last at 'Main PC') and be able to send/reply other mail. This PC you will configure exactly like you did 'Main PC', however you will select the leave mail on server option. This means that when you check mail, your mail program (on the secondary PC) is only pulling copies, and not the mail itself. It tells the mail server to mark them as 'read', but leave them on the server. Doing this, means that when you next arrive at 'Main PC', you will be able to pull all of that mail off of the server to have on 'Main PC'.
Traveling? On the move? At another internet connection at a friends house, an airport of cafe? Well then you should get familiar with WebMail! Webmail is much like a 'Secondary PC'. WebMail allows you to log into your account and view, send, and receive mail. It uses a regular browser interface which means it requires absolutely no configuring and setting up like your more elaborate PC software needs. WebMail can be a very convienent and powerful tool.
A few clairification notes :
- Be default, mail programs are set to act as 'Main PC'. You must manually tell them to leave the mail on the server in the program's options.
- WebMail is available for free to ALL members and email accounts.
- If you have more than one PC pulling mail without using the 'leave mail on server' option, then as both (or all) PC's check the mail, they will pull the mail OFF the internet permanently. This is like a "first man to check mail wins" scenerio.
- If you use ONLY Webmail, or never set up a PC to pull the mail off the server, it will pile up and eventually your mailbox on the internet WILL fill. Please always have one 'Main PC'.
